Dear Milred,
An approaching decision could make a big difference for a small forage fish that birds need. Atlantic menhaden are often referred to as the most important fish in the sea. Menhaden are a major diet item of many marine birds, game fish and marine mammals along the Atlantic coast. At-risk marine and coastal birds including Bald Eagles, Ospreys, Royal Terns, Brown Pelicans, and many others rely on menhaden and need your help in an upcoming fisheries management decision.
The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) is developing a draft to Amendment 3 to modify Atlantic menhaden’s current Fishery Management Plan. Within the draft, there are options to modify the fishery. Option E in Section 2.6 could leave 75% of menhaden pre-fishing biomass unfished and ensure the population never drops below 40%. Option E is backed by sound science and will manage the menhaden fishery in an ecosystem rather than the current single species context ecosystemsmanagement takes into account the abundance of birds and other fish and wildlife that rely on menhaden as prey.
If Option E is approved, the ASMFC will take an unprecedented step in forage fish management to safeguard the food source of many marine and coastal birds. We appreciate your help to bring the needs of birds into this decision-making process.
There will be public hearings all along the Atlantic Coast for community input on the draft. Your voice matters – if you are available, please attend and give publicc testimony. The list of hearings is attached below. Please find the hearing closest to you.
