Celebrating neighbohoods that have preserved and maintained beloved green spaces

Baltimore Green Space host its 10th Year Anniversary

The Baltimore Green Space a non-profit organization and a land trust, ‘partners with communities to preserve and support community gardens, forest, patches, pocket parks, and other spaces’.

On April 23rd, 2017 at 6:00 PM, the organization celebrated its 10th years of keeping Baltimore green and serene.  At the event, environmental loving folks and gardeners who have throughout the years been very active in their communities in Baltimore, entered the magnificent Methodist Church Building located at Saint Paul Street in Baltimore to honor the achievement of a group that started through small but bold steps.

With Potluck celebration, the attendees came through the door way each having a bowl or two of food of dinner food of sundry sorts and appetizers, desserts, to share at the grand event.

Many of the participants have been on all fours creating green Baltimore communities, and peaceful parks lined with trees, grass, and flowers. They have planted organic gardens and dirtied their palms uprooting unwanted weed. Now they see are at the 10th Annual event reminiscing from the hard work in creating clean green communities in Baltimore where they have planted fresh vegetables and teaches gardening to high school kids and even elementary children.

Participants recalled how Baltimore Green Space created the space for them to enhance their dreams of creating green neighborhoods especially when they didn’t have the wherewithal to huddle pass through tax code restrictions to foster their dreams of green communities.

Proactive leaders like Baltimore Green Space founders, (four community gardeners) aided by some legal minds, fought hard to help communities become viable and proactive in creating green spaces. From humble beginnings in 2007, Miriam Avins Founder at Baltimore Green space and her colleagues worked to remedy the situation. With a fellowship from the Open Society Institute, Miriam and her small team of gardeners devoted themselves to the task of working to grow Baltimore green spaces and with City Council and other local environmental groups and individuals, they worked hard to strengthening and protecting these precious community resources for the benefit of all.

Through their efforts residents in Baltimore city have created more than 200 green spaces on about 900 lots. These are unique spaces where citizens take their neighborhoods’ well-being into their own hands.

Importantly is the fact that the communities in Baltimore have been heavily involved in creating and managing the open spaces, including the forest patches that dot the outer areas of the city. The efforts have further provided a great amount of precious access to nature. This access undoubtedly has proven beneficial, adding to the health of the people. Providing access to land for planting and growing and making green, especially to poor neighborhoods around Baltimore City, the Baltimore Green space is indirectly tackling incidence of cardiovascular disease and stroke.

At the celebration of 10 years, Baltimore Green Space is sending a loud and clear message that more green is better in the surroundings! By getting to bring adults and children alike to get their hands dirty whilst growing plants and caring for the environment, the organization is at once bringing hopes to these communities as they embark on growing community gardens, and helping parks remain green. Baltimore Green Space is working hard with its lawyers to ensure that open spaces are preserved for communities to grow plants, and following up on bills that are on the desk of the City Council to help remedy the property tax exemption issues thereby allowing land trusts to offer greater protection to a greater number of community spaces.

This is a great opportunity for Baltimore and the attendees at the 10th Annual Baltimore Green Space celebration and they are aware of how far the organization has come to help shed light on the importance of green environments. The attendees did not just raise glasses of beer and wine, or spoiled with variety of choices of food and dinner at the Potluck celebration. They listened to the various inspirational speakers, and are keen on taking advantage of this opportunity championed by Baltimore Green Space to spring into action. Many left the celebration hall motivated to do more for the environment and to make Baltimore communities greener. A raffle draw became the climax of a well attended ‘Potluck Celebration’.
